and then the doors opened again

publication

and then the doors opened again is a collective act of imagination about the possible futures of theatre written from the moment of the Covid-19 lockdown.

The project brings together 75 visions by artists, scholars, curators and spectators, created in response to a question sent to them by David Weber-Krebs in the middle of the first wave of Covid-19 in Europe: What will happen on your first theatre visit after the lockdown?

While being confined at home, David found himself thinking about the day when theatres would open their doors again. It somehow seemed impossible to picture this moment.

On April 8, 2020, he sent an e-mail to his peers and asked them a simple question: What will happen on your first theatre visit after the lockdown?

It was an invitation to imagine the future of theatre from this very specific moment when theatres were closed and it was not clear how, and when and even if they would open again.

and then the doors opened again is a compilation of imaginings about the future of theatre and a handbook for theatre after Covid-19.

and the doors opened again - unfolding the archive

From March 2021, starting from the content of the book And then the doors opened again (Onomatopee, 2020), David Weber-Krebs and Simone Basani have engaged spectators in different countries to think further about spectatorship in and after pandemic times. New speculations, reflections and narrations have been produced through a series of collective workshops, individual talks and walks in Brussels, Skopje and different places in Latvia.

Between the 5th and the 7th of October, Simone Basani will guide a group of participants in unfolding the archive of these collected materials. In this research workshop at Theater Rotterdam, every spectator takes care of a question or a key concept coming from the materials of a previous spectator in order to challenge, explore and articulate it.

online collective workshop organized by Lokomotiva, Skopje.

And then the doors opened again continues in Skopje the research phase started in Bruxelles at Kaai, during which a series of spectators share individually their visions about future spectatorship and theatre. Part of the research is also an online collective workshop on the same topic with spectators from Macedonia and abroad.

What will happen on your first theatre visit after the lockdown? In March, David wanted to direct the same question to Kaaitheater spectators, during a walk and talk around Kaai building. It happened in March 2021.

take care

for Art Climate Transition (ACT)

A scientist needs his laboratory to conduct his research. A priest needs his congregation to perform his rituals. A politician needs to walk the corridors of power to perform it. Just so, David Weber-Krebs needs the enclosed space of the theatre, and an audience of spectators to practice care and responsibility. I meet him online and talk about his curiosity, and what becomes visible in the current situation, with the inability to work actually in his workplace, the theatre-space […]

En toen gingen de deuren van het theater opnieuw open
by Jasper Delva
